TransCare+ Condemns Alberta Government’s Anti-2SLGBTQI+ Policy Measures
TransCare+ strongly condemns the recent policy measures announced by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on January 31, 2024. These measures, which impose severe restrictions on the rights and freedoms of 2SLGBTQI+ youth, are not only harmful but also represent a significant step backward in the ongoing struggle for equality and inclusion.
Alberta’s Premier Danielle Smith introduced policy measures in a video uploaded to social media that are not based on science or research, nor do they reflect the lived experiences of Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse youth. These policy measures are based on misinformation and represent explicit attempts at legislating hate.
TransCare+ stands in solidarity with Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse youth, their parents, organizations, and community groups in Alberta and across Canada in denouncing these measures. We believe that such policies not only endanger the mental and physical well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth but also perpetuate fear, division, and misunderstanding within communities.
We demand that the Alberta government immediately rescind these policies and engage in meaningful dialogue with 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations, affirming providers, families, and youth. It is crucial to develop policies informed by those who are directly affected and supported by evidence-based information. Policies should aim to protect and empower all youth, including Two-Spirit, trans, and gender-diverse youth, not marginalize them further.
The actions of the Alberta government do not reflect the values of inclusivity and respect for human rights. TransCare+ urges the government to reconsider its stance and work towards policies that foster solidarity, care, and understanding.
We call upon our allies, supporters, and the broader community to join us in opposing these regressive policies and advocating for the rights and dignity of all 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals.
Together, we can work towards a future where fear and division are replaced with solidarity and care.
Still we persist.
