Introduction

TransCare+ defines community care as any act that involves communal responsibility to care for and about one another. In this section you will learn about what community care is. This includes defining community care and beginning to understand the importance of community care. For Indigenous communities care has a different history, meaning, and practice for different Indigenous nations and tribes. Our zine titled “When Old Practices Find Us Now” gives insight to Indigenous understandings of community care and tells the story of “The Seven Fires Prophecy” as a way of retelling Indigenous community care history.

Begin by understanding how TransCare+ defines community care. Reflect on this definition and think about instances of community care in your own life.

Start by watching the video: What Does Community Care Mean to You? – TransCare+. This will provide a foundational understanding of community care from the perspective of different individuals.
