What is Elders, Seniors, and Older Persons Care?
This category of care acknowledges that as the 2SLGBTQIA+ community ages, elders, seniors, and older persons continue to face systemic discrimination and oppression because of their age, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. As a result, there are unique challenges in access to age specific care such as long-term care, retirement, homecare, and social service systems become increasingly difficult to navigate.

Assisted Living
Assisted living facilities are categorized into two types: retirement homes and nursing homes. Retirement homes strive to deliver a blend of personal and medical care in a home-like environment, emphasizing residents' independence and creating spaces akin to apartments or condos due to the diverse levels of care and supervision.
In contrast, nursing homes cater to individuals with needs concerning their daily functioning, necessitating 24-hour assistance and robust medical support. These facilities, while aiming to maintain a comforting atmosphere, adopt a more hospital-like environment equipped with medical apparatus to handle immediate healthcare needs.
End of Life Care
End of life care includes all physical, social, and spiritual support for patients and their families usually provided through palliative, supportive, and hospice care. The ultimate goal of end of life care is to ensure the regulating of pain and other symptoms for patients to be as comfortable as possible nearing the end of their lives.
Six things to keep in mind while meeting the needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ elders, seniors, and older persons’ during end of life care are; social support to their chosen family, respectful conversations around patients intimacy needs and health status, mitigate discrimination, advance care planning and legal preparedness, access to healthcare services that are inclusive and gender-affirming.
Memory Care
For many elders, seniors or older persons struggling with dementia, cognitive aging, developmental neurodivergence, traumatic brain injuries or any other neurological difficulties related to memory it is common that families consider assisted living with memory care.
Memory care incorporates staff members who are specially trained to understand the needs of people at all stages of memory capacity and supports individuals who may also experience frustration, anxiety, aggression, or communication issues as a result of memory difficulties.
